Dear Community,
Welcome back, we hope you had a wonderful Semana Santa! I was fortunate enough to take a trip to Oaxaca with my family and absolutely loved it—the city, the food, the artisans, the Sierras, the people, the culture, and more! It was truly an incredible experience!
We have lots to share this week, especially in regards to Earth Day (actually Earth Month). A quick run-down on the events:
1) Earth Month Challenge: For the month of April I am challenging each and every family, and each and every student, to the Earth Month Challenge! The idea is simple: living a more sustainable life requires changes in our daily lives. The idea for the challenge is that you work with your family to make the change and then try and stick with it. This week it’s time to set put your change into action! What have you chose to do? Still need ideas?
*Refuse to use any Styrofoam
*Refuse straws when they are offered to you
*Walk to school once or twice a week (or more) instead of driving (and yes, even our electric golf carts cause pollution—where does that electricity come from?)
*Help clean up your neighborhood
*Buy few packaged food and reduce your garbage
*Start recycling if you don’t already
*Start composting by dropping off your food waste/scraps at school—we’d love your help in making more compost!
*Incorporate more non-toxic cleaning products in your house
*Take shorter showers and conserve water
*Start a home garden and grow some of your own food
*Find something that is important to you and do it!
2) Photo Contest and Exhibition: Like last year we will have a photo contest highlighting the importance of nature and conservation—more details coming this week! You and your child can start now (yes, there will be a parent and teacher category) by taking photos or looking through past photos. The top 25 photos will be on display on Earth Day.
3) Classroom activities: Various activities will take place throughout the month
4) Book Exchange: On Earth Day, Friday April 22, bring a book or two you’d like to exchange for another book or two. A great way to re-use books!
5) Local clean ups: Each class will help to clean the community
6) Repurposing Challenge: Students will be challenged to create new things out of discarded materials. Stay tuned for more details.
7) Information sharing: Secundaria students will write an article for El Sayulero and will be handing out plants and information to local businesses.
The key value for April is Communication, perhaps one our greatest resources. What we say and how we say it can mean all the difference in our relationships with others. We’ll be discussing communication and its importance here at school and we hope you will do the same at home! A couple of articles to share: Talking and listening, Communicating with children
Though school was closed yesterday a few students had the good fortune to meet Jon Rose, professional surfer and safe water activist. Jon was in town for a good friend’s wedding and came to CVIS to present one of the filters his organization, Waves for Water (http://www.wavesforwater.org/) share with thousands of people around the world who do not have access to safe drinking water. The filter was given to a San Ignacio resident whose family lives off the grid and primarily sustains themselves off of rain water. The family can now safely drink water, up to about a million gallons with the filter they just received! We hope the students who were here for the presentation are now inspired to carry on this mission of helping to provide safe drinking water to people here in Mexico.
SURF A THON!!!
The Surf a Thon is coming up April 23! Have you signed up yet? The surfing part is from 9am-1pm, followed by the party from 1-3pm. After School Opportunities with Jason and Elena:
Starting this week our artist in residence Jason and Elena will be offering a few after school activities:
*JUGGLING--Tuesday and Thursday 2:30 - 3:30-- Jason will be offering a juggling club for students ages 9-15. All level of jugglers are welcome; no experience necessary. Come learn to juggle or learn new tricks. The possibilities are endless! Cost is 100 pesos per class.
*UKULELE--Tuesday 3:30 - 4:30-- Elena will also begin offering group Ukulele lessons. All experience levels welcome. Come bring your Ukulele and learn your favorite songs. Cost is 100 pesos per class. You can come to just juggling, just Ukulele or stay for both! There will be a 10% discount if you pre pay for 10 classes at a time. Scholarship funding available, please inquire.

Bienvenido de nuevo, esperamos que hayas tenido una maravillosa Semana Santa! Yo tuve la suerte de hacer un viaje a Oaxaca con mi familia y nos encantó - la ciudad, la comida, los artesanos, las sierras, las personas, la cultura, y mucho más! Fue realmente una experiencia increíble!
Tenemos mucho que compartir esta semana, especialmente en respecto a Día de la Tierra (en realidad Mes de la Tierra). Un pequeño resume de los eventos:
1) Desafío Mes de la Tierra: Para el mes de abril estoy desafiando a cada familia, y cada uno de los estudiantes, al Desafío Mes de la Tierra! La idea es simple: vivir una vida más sostenible requiere cambios en nuestra vida diaria. La idea detrás del desafío es que elija un pequeño cambio que le gustaría hacer para vivir de forma más sostenible y durante un mes usted y su familia haga el cambio. La esperanza es que después del mes, el cambio sea permanente. Es hora de empezar con su cambio! Que eligió cambiar? Aun necesitas ideas?
* Negarse a utilizar cualquier unicel
* Rechazar popotes cuando les ofrezcan
* Caminar a la escuela una o dos veces a la semana (o más) en lugar de conducir (y sí, incluso nuestros carros de golf eléctricos causan contaminación. De dónde viene la electricidad?)
* Ayudar a limpiar su vecindario
* Comprar pocos alimentos envasados reducir su basura
* Iniciar el reciclaje si no lo hace ya
* Empezar a usar la composta – puede dejar sus residuos de alimentos en la escuela –nos encantaría contar con su ayuda para hacer más compost a!
* Incorporar más productos de limpieza no tóxicos en su casa
* Tome duchas más cortas y conservar el agua
* Iniciar un jardín en casa y hacer crecer algunos de sus propios alimentos
* Encuentra algo que es importante para usted y hacerlo!
2) Concurso de Fotografía y Exposición: Al igual que el año pasado tendremos un concurso de fotografía que destaca la importancia de la naturaleza y la conservación- Más detalles en esta semana! Usted y su hijo pueden comenzar ahora (sí, habrá una categoría de padre y maestro) tomando fotos o mirando las fotos anteriores. Las 25 mejores fotos estarán en exhibición el Día de la Tierra.
3) Actividades en clase: Diversas actividades se llevarán a cabo durante todo el mes
4) Intercambio de libros: El Día de la Tierra, viernes 22 de abril, puede traer un libro o dos que te gustaría cambiar por otros. Una gran manera de reutilizar los libros!
5) limpieza local: Cada clase ayudará a limpiar la comunidad
6) Desafío Reutilización: Los estudiantes tendrán el reto de crear cosas nuevas con materiales reciclados. Estén atentos para más detalles.
7) Intercambio de información: los estudiantes de secundaria escribirán un artículo para El Sayulero y entregaran plantas e información a las empresas locales.
El valor del mes para abril es la comunicación, quizás uno de nuestros más grandes recursos. Lo que decimos y cómo lo decimos puede significar la diferencia en nuestras relaciones con los demás. Vamos a estar discutiendo la comunicación y su importancia aquí en la escuela y esperamos que va a hacer lo mismo en casa! Aunque la escuela se cerró ayer algunos estudiantes tuvieron la suerte de conocer a Jon Rose, surfista profesional y activista de agua potable. Jon estaba en la ciudad para la boda de un buen amigo y llegó a CVIS para presentar uno de los filtros que su organización, Waves for Water( http://www.wavesforwater.org/) comparte con miles de personas en todo el mundo que no tienen acceso al agua potable. El filtro fue dado a un residente de San Ignacio cuya familia vive fuera de la red y en primer lugar sostiene a sí mismos con las aguas pluviales. La familia ahora puede beber el agua sin peligro, hasta aproximadamente un millón de galones con el filtro que acaba de recibir! Esperamos que los estudiantes que estuvieron aquí para la presentación ahora se inspiren para llevar a cabo esta misión de ayudar a proporcionar agua potable a la gente aquí en México.

Ya llega el Surf a Thon el 23 de abril! ¿Te has registrado? El surf es de 9 a.m.-1 p.m., seguido por la fiesta de 1-3 pm. Oportunidades después de la escuela con Jason y Elena:
Empezando esta semana Jason y Elena estarán ofreciendo algunas clases después de la escuela.
*Malabarismo Lunes y Miércoles 2:30-3:30—Jason estará ofreciendo un club de malabarismo para los estudiantes de 9-15 años de edad. Todos los niveles de malabaristas son bienvenidos; no se requiere experiencia. Ven a aprender a hacer malabares o aprender nuevos trucos ¡Las posibilidades son infinitas! 100 pesos por clases.
*Ukulele Lunes y Miércoles 3:30-4:30-- Elena también comenzará a ofrecer clases de Ukulele. Todos los niveles de experiencia son bienvenidos. Venga con su ukulele a aprender sus canciones favoritas. El costo es de 100 pesos por clase. Usted puede venir a malabares, Ukulele o quedarse para ambos! Habrá un descuento del 10 % si pre paga por 10 clases a la vez. Becas disponibles, favor de consultar.
